Umbrella Academy: New Powers Each Hargreeves Sibling Could Have In Season 3

The seven Hargreeves siblings in The Umbrella Academy already have stunning and supernatural powers, but season 3 can give them new abilities. As the Hargreeves siblings practiced their powers and gained more control throughout The Umbrella Academy season 2, they discovered new a handful of new abilities and reached new heights. With the Umbrella Academy continuing to work together in season 3, new episodes may reveal even more surprises when it comes to what the Hargreeves family can do.

Adopted from Gerard Way's three-volume comic book series, The Umbrella Academy follows a group of dysfunctional superheroes on a mission to save the world. Raised by distant and eccentric genius Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), the seven siblings all eventually left the Umbrella Academy before reconvening for Hargreeves’ funeral. But the return of Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), a time traveler, set in motion a series of events that always seem to end in an apocalypse.

As the siblings work together to prevent the end of the world, they begin to rediscover their powers. While some new abilities were revealed in The Umbrella Academy season 2, more revelations for the characters and the audience undoubtedly await in season 3, especially with the introduction of the Sparrow Academy. The Dark Horse comics also provide some source material that is unexplored so far.

Luther/Number One

While Number One’s (Tom Hopper) powers are mostly physical, his role as leader of the Umbrella Academy also reflects possibly supernatural character traits that are cited by Reginald Hargreeves in the Dark Horse comics. In addition to “enhanced physical strength and resilience,” Reginald describes Luther as excelling at everything he tries, “particularly aviation and marksmanship.”

Luther’s physical strength grew throughout seasons 1 and 2, enhanced by DNA turning him into an ape hybrid. In addition to Hulk-like strength, Luther is shown to withstand incredible physical abuse, walking away after being crushed by a chandelier and taking the brunt of a missile explosion - but this strength does have a limit. As The Umbrella Academy season 3 continues to explore Luther’s character, his other abilities may come into play, such as his aptitude for piloting. The series may also further explore Luther’s monkey-like abilities, like opposable toes, which are mostly downplayed or ignored in the TV adaptation.

Diego/Number Two

Of all the members of the Umbrella Academy, Diego’s (David Castañeda) powers are the ones that undergo the most drastic changes in the TV series. In comic story Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite, Diego is introduced as a character who can hold his breath indefinitely, with his facility with knives only being mentioned as an afterthought. This underwater power is overlooked in The Umbrella Academy season 1; instead, there’s an emphasis on Diego’s ability to change the path of knives as they arc through the air, always hitting their target.

Diego’s quasi-telekinetic power is expanded in season 2, with episodes showing that he can stop bullets midair and control the path they take. Initially, Diego seems to struggle to use this power depending on the velocity and number of objects in the air, but he is also seen controlling it with ease. Will this power continue to evolve in season 3 or will Diego’s water-based abilities finally be brought into play? It could go either way. One thing is for sure, though: The limits of Diego’s ability have not yet been defined, so as he grows stronger, his power could as well.

Allison/Number Three

Although Allison Hargreeves’ (Emmy Raver-Lampman) power in the Umbrella Academy appears straightforward, it’s one of the most flexible and unpredictable. In season 1, she uses it as a basic form of mind control, forcing people to do her bidding by saying the phrase, “I heard a rumor.” In addition to controlling actions, Allison can also use her power to control thoughts and feelings (seemingly indefinitely), making Vanya believe she’s ordinary and making her husband fall in love with her.

In The Umbrella Academy season 2, however, audiences see that Allison’s power goes way beyond just mind control. Mirroring the Dark Horse comics, Allison begins to use her power to bend reality. She can kill people just by saying she heard she “blew their minds,” for example, as seen in the season premiere. In The Umbrella Academy: Dallas, Allison uses her power to make President John F. Kennedy’s head explode.

As Allison’s power continues to evolve, it could be used in more direct, aggressive ways in season 3. In the comics, Allison uses her power to create matter, making items appear out of thin air, and sometimes even she doesn’t know what her words will produce. By trying out different phrases, Allison could create some truly terrifying weapons in The Umbrella Academy season 3.

Klaus/Number Four

Klaus’ (Robert Sheehan) psychic abilities in the Umbrella Academy rapidly expand from season 1 to 2. He starts out being able to summon ghosts and speak to the dead, but only sporadically. As he sobers up, Klaus discovers he can manifest ghosts in the real world, making Ben corporeal and giving him influence in a battle. In The Umbrella Academy season 2, Klaus’ control on ghosts improves. He discovers that he can let ghosts, namely Ben, possess and use his body. Klaus also seems to be unable to die, having returned from the afterlife twice.

As one of the most powerful characters in the comics, there are depths to Klaus’ power that remain unexplored. The Umbrella Academy season 3 could show the introduction of Klaus’ ability to read minds, float, use astral projection to communicate with his siblings, or possess and control the actions of others. In the comics, Klaus is also the one to ultimately save the Hargreeves siblings from the first apocalypse, halting the fall of a 40,000-ton moon rock with telekinesis. In season 3, his powers could expand in any number of directions, incorporating his abilities from the comics that the TV series seems to have forgotten about (for now).

Number Five

Number Five’s power to travel through space and time is a huge asset in seasons 1 and 2. His ability to jump through space gives him an edge in any physical confrontation, allowing him to ruthlessly eliminate members of the Commission. But his ability to travel through time is even more valuable, allowing him to warn his siblings of impending apocalypses and changing the future. While Number Five has honed his space-jumping powers, he's still unable to properly travel through time without impacting the future. The three big jumps he attempted all ended in disaster. The end of season 2 shows Number Five finally gaining some control over this ability, jumping through seconds rather than years, and saving his siblings from the Handler (Kate Walsh).

The Umbrella Academy season 3 may show Number Five using this power even more - performing “micro jumps,” as he does in the comics - to move faster than the eye can perceive and determine the outcome of any battle. Small jumps through time could also be used to manipulate other future events - the possibilities are limitless. Season 3 could also address the ways Number Five’s physical condition was manipulated by the Commission. In the comics, the Commission, a.k.a. Temps Aeternalis, turns Number Five into a merciless killer by binding his DNA to that every famous assassin from history, explaining his bloodthirsty nature. In the comics, Number Five’s aging was also halted by the Commission, effectively making him immortal. This is a huge reveal that would give the show much more to explore when it comes to Number Five.

Ben/Number Six

Not a lot is known about Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min) besides the fact that he died in the Umbrella Academy as a teenager. Ben’s power to transform into a tentacle monster is only shown a few times throughout seasons 1 and 2. Physically, he’s very powerful, and he's able to use tentacles to rip enemies apart and throw them across the room. But what else can he do? Ben’s power seems limited, but further physical skills could be revealed in season 3 now that he's technically alive.

Ben has complete control over a number of tentacles that could be used to swim or swing across the city. Plus, the origin of Ben’s powers is still unknown. Unlike the other Hargreeves siblings, Ben seems to be a kind of hybrid creature. Perhaps, like Sir Reginald Hargreeves, he has some connection to alien life? Ben’s re-entrance in the last scene of season 2, as the leader of the Sparrow Academy, suggests season 3 will dive more deeply into Ben’s backstory and powers which could show the true extent of his tentacle abilities.

Vanya/Number Seven

Having triggered the apocalypse twice, Vanya (Ellen Page) is arguably the most powerful member of the Umbrella Academy. Her ability to convert sound waves into a physical force gives her the power to kill people and unleash widespread destruction. The range of her power is seemingly limitless, dependent on her emotions and mental state. The Umbrella Academy season 1 ends with Vanya sucking the life out of her siblings “with energy tentacles,” as Diego says, suggesting that her power may also give her a more subtle control over life and death. This is reinforced in season 2 when Vanya revives Harlan Cooper from drowning and transfers some of her power to him in the process.

Season 2 also shows Vanya using her power to create shields and penetrate barriers. For much of the series, Vanya struggles to control her power. When she begins to finally get a handle on how to use it at the end of Season 2 with the help of Ben, she starts to use it like a scalpel rather than a sledgehammer. As Vanya’s control improves in Season 3, she may continue to explore the subtleties of her power, discovering new ways to heal people or lend her power to her siblings.
