Patrick van Aanholt opened the scoring and Lamine Kone hit a double as the north-east club sent their neighbours and rivals down on Wednesday, as well as Norwich Sunderland sent both Newcastle United and Norwich City down to the Championship while preserving their own top-flight status with a crushing 3-0 victory over Everton at the Stadium of Light.

The hosts came into Wednesday's meeting knowing three points would be enough to secure safety and send Newcastle down, along with Norwich, who were hosting Watford.
