So, Palace get their Premier League season off to a winning start which will please Hodgson after they finished last season without a win in their last seven outings. Their attention now turns to the EFL Cup though when they face Bournemouth on Tuesday. Southampton dominated in the game, but couldn't find a way through and Hasenhuttl will expect better from them against Brentford in the EFL Cup next time out.
Zaha's first-half goal seals a 1-0 win for Palace over Southampton. Townsend set Palace on the counter-attack and Zaha volleyed his cross past McCarthy from close range early in the game. Southampton could've been down to 10 men just after half-time as a Walker-Peters was shown a red card for a high boot but the referee changed it to a yellow after checking the pitchside monitor. Zaha then had a second goal disallowed for a tight offside late on.
