Have Everton finally cracked it? Three new signings certainly made a huge difference as they deservedly defeated Tottenham Hotspur – who were remarkably flat and unimaginative – and with James Rodriguez showing the sublime touch that has made him the Colombian a world superstar.
Rodriguez lost his way at Real Madrid but he made an impression in his first appearance in the Premier League as did Allan, with Abdoulaye Doucoure also doing well as manager Carlo Ancelotti saw the first vindication of his demands for a re-shaped team.
After all the money spent and wasted in the years of Farhad Moshiri’s ownership, and the managers hired and fired, if this is a new-look Everton it has made an appealing start.
It was a player Ancelotti has inherited, and has encouraged, who claimed the only goal with Dominic Calvert-Lewin again showing his prowess in the air as he rose, in between the Spurs centre-halves Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier, to power home a free-kick by Lucas Digne. It was the least that Everton deserved as they spurned chances created by their dominance.
It was only the opening fixture of what will be the most demanding of seasons but the visitors simply appeared to want it more and were better-organised and more positive which is an indictment of Spurs and their manager Jose Mourinho.
